NELLIE BELLE'S: Day Dreamer & Teal Next Time

Nellie Belle's Day Dreamer (left) and Teal Next Time (right)

YAY! It's Friday ~ We made it guys! Hahah :] Today is a blog post I haven't been looking forward to writing, but it must be done, I must keep my promise. I feel like I have encountered a lot of great products and a few products that just haven't been my thing, I guess these polishes are just that. (Why am I saying this? Because I've dreaded having to be honest the last couple days hahaha)

I have written to the creator of these polishes to make sure there were no surprises in this blog post for her and she mentioned she was tweaking some of the items as she was writing to me. I'm known for being honest and keeping it real and I'd like to keep it that way! So, without further adieu....

I was sent two polishes by Nellie Belle's. Most of her polishes consist of jelly finishes, so that's what I'll be showing you today!

Nellie Belle's Day Dreamer is a light blue jelly base with different color pastel matte stars, shreds and a pinch of squares and some white matte micro glitter. It's a very whimsical and light looking polish! If you like stars, this is right up your ally haha

I did 1 coat of Day Dreamer over Barielle Swizzle Stick. I was really looking forward to Day Dreamer to be a polish that creates an instant jelly sandwhich on the nail, which would of been cool with the stars! But sadly, it's too sheer :[ After 3 coats it looked like I had clear coat with glitter on my nails. The application wasn't bad and was smooth with no issues, and the glitter was easy to get out (as you can see from the number of stars I was able to grab without fishing! haha).

The problem for me with this one comes down to dry time. I did 1 coat over my base color (which was dry for about 30 minutes because I got distracted hahahah), after 10 minutes of waiting for this baby to dry it was still wet to the touch. I know what you're thinking - slap some Seche on that sucker! I honestly think if I put Seche Vite on this polish it would of dragged and it would of shrunk like crazy :[

I did have another issue with this polish, but I will address it in the next polish...

Nellie Belle's Teal Next Time

Nellie Belle's Teal Next time is a teal jelly polish. I don't know if it's my stained nails (probably), or my skin tone but this didn't look teal to me on my hands in real life. It forsure looked teal in the bottle though! It looks so squishy haha doesn't it make you want to squish 'em! Okay, just me? Cool beansies.

I did 5 coats of Teal Next Time, over bare nails. Haha I know what you're thinking "hold the dayum phone, Lacey broke her 3 coat rule?!" Sorry kiddos, I wasn't going to show you 3 coats, that would of been unfortunate. So yes, I did 5 coats *sigh*.  The application was fine, it was smooth and no dragging involved. I would of preferred a more opaque jelly, but this isn't my world! I had the dry time issue with this one again, but I'm assuming it was worse since there was more coats versus the above mani. I didn't bother with Seche once again, because I knew it would be problematic in the end.

I mentioned above I would address another issue with the polish I had. It was the smell. I know that this seems to be an issue that is popping up. Normally, I can pass over the "smelly bases" and swatch them with no problem. The first one, Day Dreamer, was no issue. It did have a slight, what I call "salon smell", an acrylic smell to it - but it wasn't enough to make me not want to use the polish. Teal Next Time is another story... When I was talking to a friend, I described it as "10 nail salons stuck into a bottle" - that's honestly how strong it was to me. I'm sure someone will say I'm being overly sensitive, but after I was done swatching and doing the nail art below I had a headache for 4 hours straight from the smell of this polish. Guess I should of used this polish outside? I don't even know what to say... lmao besides what I already said. It was pretty repulsive in my mind.

I talked to Danielle and she assured me that her products were 3-free (even mentioned she double checked the ingredients) and the smell comes from the dyes she uses in her products. I truely hope she looks to choosing a different type of dye because that smell was just too much for one small bottle of polish to pack. I think if other polish makers can find dyes that don't pack the salon smelling punch, then it shouldn't be sold as so... but that's just me!

If you have a sensitivity to smells that bring on headaches/migraines (me, myself, and I), I suggest you skip this product. Otherwise, knock yourself out! Or wear a face mask haha or paint outside! Or with a filtration system or something! Haha, you know what I mean.

I don't know if you've seen the jelly sammich mani floating around that involves shaped glitters you buy for nail art biznits? I forget who make it (because I forget everything), but I decided Teal Next Time was the perfect polish to recreate it with!

IT'S MANI JELLY SAMMICH TIME!
IT'S MANI JELLY SAMMICH TIME!
This was done by using 2 coats of Teal Next Time, adding some glitters from The Dollar Tree I bought last summer (I think some of them still have them), 1 coat of Teal Next Time, adding more glitter, and then finishing off with 2 more coats of Teal Next Time. Again, dry time issues and such but it was fun to look at! Learned I also suck a placing glitter on my nails! GOOD TIMES IN THIS POST YA'LL! Man.

As I stated beforehand, any issues I had with these polishes were brought up with Danielle before I posted this blog post. I do hope she takes my suggestions into consideration as I think they will help better her polish line. I enjoy being known as an honest blogger, and I intend to keep it that way through every product I review. I appreciate your respect for my opinions <3

11:57 AM EDIT: I forgot to address the bottles. As you can see my bottles are not full. This picture was taken before I used them. Haha I tried to shake them to see if they could look full to make a nice picture but it couldn't be done. I also spoke to Danielle about this and this was due to the fact it was a press sample, all consumer end products will be full items.

7:22 PM EDIT: Some issues now have some light shed on them thanks to my readers commenting and messaging me! You guys are awesome. The dyes used in these polishes are for acrylics, not intended for polish making, hence the crazy smell. These dyes are sold by Naillite, if you are looking to start making polishes I do suggest something different (obviously haha). I have forwarded the information to Danielle who informed me she has shut down her shop (for a good amount of time) to search for new supplies to reformulate to eliminate the strong smells and slow drying time! Live and learn!

  2. Great review Lacey! No one ever wants to hear the cons of their products, but someone has to do it! I appreciate your honest opinions and experience with all products you review. Overall the end result of this polish looks good, i like the colors... although the teal tends to look more like a jelly forest green. Theyre still cute :) <3

    1. Thanks lovely. I'm glad you appreciated the honesty! I think it does too, I'm a green freak though and I still liked it lmao I really do think it was my staining :-\ it looked quite teal in the sammich?

  3. I ordered some dyes that smell really bad and decided that I can't use them in my nail polishes. I could never sell a stinky polish to someone. The reason they smell is because they are for acrylic nails. They are the monomer you add to the acrylic, which is why they have the "nail salon smell".

    1. That's exactly what a polish maker friend told me! Makes sense that's where the smell comes from.

  4. Oh man...You were pretty nice overall for what seems like it was a disastrous situation. That first polish looks SO thick on your nails, I don't even think I could have posted if my nails were that thick with polish! It reminded me of that picture of the person who added 50 or whatever layers of polish and it was like an inch tall. But seriously. I'm sorry. I also don't think you should send half full press samples out. A blog review goes a long way to make or break your business, more people are going to read YOUR review than any random person who tells a few of their friends the polish sucked, they should only be sending out the same exact item a customer would purchase. Thank you for being so honest, I wish more people could be so blunt.
